If you are not in a zoned area, should you legally have to follow county building codes?

we live in an unzoned subdivision and wish to build an addition, the county building authority says we have to buy a permit and are subject to inspection. I would like to know where to find the answer to this problem, we don't think we should have to be inspected.
Answers:
zoning and building codes are different thing, you have to comply
no you shouldn't
make sure ur not in zone but other wise take it to court or if its not a big deal let them feel in power and do the inspection
the inspection system benefits you by helping you catch errors that could eventually do you harm, and it protects the rest of us by making sure you don't do something that harms our interests from watersheds to aesthetics to property line rights, and protects whoever eventually buys your house after you. don't look at the inspectors as intruders...look at them as a resource. They may protect you from the contractor(s) and/or yourself. I have found them to be a great help when i have done projects at my home, catching important mistakes I was making.
